SPECTACULAR CROWD SHOWS JUST HOW PASSIONATE SOLOMON ISLANDERS ARE FOR FOOTBALL.

The Solomon Cup kicked off in high spirit and presented the crazy football fans with some actions to remember. The most notable teams that showed their class in the opening days are Temotu, Makira, Malaita and Western Province. The incredible atmosphere at Lawson Tama was second to none as fans turned up in numbers to witness some of the new talents in Solomon Islands football taking on the field at Lawson Tama Stadium.

Solomon Islands head coach, Felipe Vega-arango was amongst some of the top coaches who watched closely on the new talents showing their ability in representing their respective provinces. It was an incredible atmosphere at Lawson Tama and something that is needed for a while as we’re slowly rebuilding our football piece by piece. In the second day of the tournament, Malaita was forced to share a point with the brave Western Turtle side. The crowd erupted in excitement when Western Turtle equalized after Malaita showed some class. However, the most interesting match was the later match which showed the Makira side giving a hard lesson to the brave Avaiki football team. The spirit and determination of the Avaiki players were something pleasing to watch. Solomon Islands skipper, Henry Fa’arodo Jnr who was amongst some of the crowd watching expressed his personal view, “I really like the attitude of these Avaiki players. I think football needs a lot of players to be aggressive like these players”, Fa’arodo said. When asked about the crowd watching, the national team captain said, “This is positive to see Solomon Islanders watching in numbers but most impressively, the rain couldn’t kill these supporters’ hearts. I am amazed but thankful to these great Solomon Islanders”.

The current Solomon Cup is a tournament which potential future footballers can shine and so far, the Solomon Islanders who turned up to support are the ones that really make the occasion special. It was very encouraging to see fellow Solomon Islanders shouting, cheering and even getting emotional about the matches. A better future for football is when people are enjoying it and part of the precious moments.
